Occupy New England to NYC to join Sandy relief efforts

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Members of Occupy New England, which includes activists from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut will be leaving tonight to assist in relief efforts in lower Manhattan. They will be joining members of Occupy Wall Street and the newly formed “Occupy Sandy,” as well as other community groups in order to provide emergency supplies and help with cleanup.

Occupy Hartford will be collecting an initial round of donations at Turning Point Park (corner of Broad & Farmington Avenue) at 6pm tonight.

When asked why Occupy New England would get involved in community efforts, Jason Morris of Occupy New London said, “Occupy isn’t just about protest and direct action, it’s about creating the revolutionary world that we want to live in through rebuilding the community our society with which our society used to thrive. Providing aid to our brothers and sisters because they are us and we are them – we are all human – is exactly that world we wish to create.”

Rebecca Burton of Occupy Hartford added, “This effort came together in less than twelve hours due to the connections that we’ve built across the region, as well as in New York City. We’re gratified to see the work that Occupy Wall Street is doing already to help provide support and ultimately to help rebuild this ravaged area that most of us have come to know so well through our work over the past year.” Burton went on to say that Occupy Hartford will be working to coordinate efforts to assist with the devastation that was visited upon Connecticut residents as well.

As of August 15, 2012 the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services have been accepting requests for consideration of deferred action for childhood arrivals. Deferred action is a discretionary determination to defer removal action of an individual as an act of prosecutorial discretion. Under this process, USCIS will consider requests on a case-by-case basis. While this process does not provide lawful status or a pathway to permanent residence or citizenship, individuals whose cases are deferred will not be removed from the United States for a two year period, subject to renewal, and may also receive

employment authorization.

Occupy New England Regional Gathering #2 – Sunday, July 29, 2012

In support of the protest of the New England Conference of Governors! While powerful groups of politicians, advisers, lobbyists, investors and venture capitalists meet behind closed doors to plan the future of our region, we’re going to build power where it counts — in the streets!

Gov. , Shumlin of Vermont and Prem. Jean “Padapouf” Charest will be co-hosting Govs. Malloy (CT), Patrick (MA), Lynch (NH), Chafee (RI) and LePage (ME) for a discussion of regional affairs, including the Trailbreaker pipeline, Northern Pass and the supression of peaceful protests in the spirit of the REAL tea partiers and those lost at the Boston Massacre.

The first protest will be held at noon on the 29th, followed by a human oil spill -hosted by 350 Vermont- at 2:00. The Regional Gathering will be held at 4:00 to keep up momentum. We’ll be planning nonviolent resistence against the Trailbreaker pipeline, Northern Pass and Vermont Yankee, as well as the future of occupation in the New England region.

So join your neighbors from across New England and Eastern Canada in kicking off two days of resistance against the Trailbreaker pipeline, Northern Pass, Vermont Yankee and all the issues that affect the people across our regions!

Bring pots, pans and camping gear… this is going to be the ONE event you CAN’T miss!

People’s University presents: NDAA

People’s University presents:
NDAA
National Defense Authorization Act ): panel of speakers & discussion

Saturday, July 21,  Noon to 2:30 pm
Unitarian Meeting House, 50 Bloomfield Avenue, Hartford - Download Flyer Here
On December 31, 2001 President Obama signed into law provisions 1021 and 1022 of the National Defense Autorization Act (NDAA), codifying indefinite military detention without charge or trial.  These provisions allow the President to order the military to detain any person indefinitely and without trial who is accused of participating in or supporting an open-ended variety of organizations and activities (for which no evidence is required).American citizens are NOT excluded from this law despite intentionally vague language.  These provisions threaten our basic civil liberties, including free speech and association – especially with additional recent law and precedent.

The indefinite detention provisions of the NDAA are only parts of a much broader attack on civil liberties involving increased surveillance, the use of torture, assassinations, pre-emptive prosecutions and the promotion of Islamophobia – all justified by the “War on Terror.”

Speakers:

Emma Roderick – Grassroots Campaign Coordinator, The Bill of Rights Defense Committee
Tokuji Okamoto – Organizer, The Connecticut Coalition to Stop Indefinite Detention

Occupy Hartford Community Canned Food Drive

Occupy Hartford is hosting a canned food drive on 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Colt Park, Hartford.  This event coincides with the arrival of the Occupy Caravan, which has been crossing the country and heading to Philadelphia for a national gathering on July 4th.

90% of all food collected remains here in Hartford. The other 10% will be taken by the Occupy Caravan and will be distributed to the hungry during a mass feeding event in Philadelphia. (The Mayor of Philadelphia, Michael Nutter, announced a ban against feeding the hungry outdoors which went into effect June 1, 2012. To protect hungry Americans, the ACLU has filed suit against the city of Philadelphia.)

Please, help the hungry in Hartford. Please show your support for the hungry in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia.

The people of Hartford have shown great support for the Occupy Movement and for this, we say Thank You! Please show your continued support by dropping off a canned food item on the 28th.

DIRECTIONS TO COLT PARK

Please stand with Lindsey Against Unlawful Arrest

By Lindsey Wainwright, an Occupy Hartford Protestor:

“Last week I went to community court and refused to take community service on the basis that I am not guilty of either of these charges. My case is being sent to trial by jury. The pretrial will take place on May 22nd at 9 am at 80 Washington Street in Hartford, CT. Witnesses who were involved in the action will be called to testify on my behalf. Their presence is especially important considering that my arresting officer lied in his report, claiming that I resisted arrest.”

On Tuesday, May 22, Please join us at court in solidarity with Lindsey Wainwright to send a clear message that arresting citizens for legally filming in public IS AGAINST THE LAW and will not be tolerated.
