General Assembly 9/29/12 – Minutes

Saturday, September 29th, 2:30 pm, HPL corner Attending: Alice (facilitator), Garret (notes), Sara, Diane, Mario, Sean Meegan (UConn student), Laura (? notes aren’t clear), and (eventually) Leslie from Kabbalah House

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Garret gave an update on the Ryan action. This happened the next day, Sunday, Sep. 30. Anniversary — we’ll have another planning meeting for the anniversary celebration, this will take place in conjunction with the Monday gathering at Kabbalah House tonight Oct. 1.

Sean is doing his senior Sociology honors thesis on Occupy generally and OH specifically, asks to be included and of course is. He hopes to observe meetings and activities going forward.

Alice passed around a petition opposing nuclear war she got from Joe Wasserman at Hope Out Loud last weekend. Alice saw Hannah from the encampment and 70-80 other people at HOL.

REPORTBACKS

Occupy Monsanto at the Big E — Debra, Nancy, and two women from from Boston area met up and hung around waiting to go in with “civs,” Debra in now famous chicken hat to elicit responses. They asked tough questions of Monsanto flacks in somewhat low key Monsanto traveling fair exhibit. Sounds like they a good time and stood their ground.

Anniversay

We wound up discussing issues, not really a reportback. There will be signholding at TPP, Farmington and Broad, this Thursday October 4, 4-6 pm.

The celebration will consist of:

  • 1 pm gathering and install Timeline in tunnel between Bushnell and TPP (assume cops won’t care, if they intervene we’ll explain only for few hours, chill — we’ll take it down when our event ends);
  • 2 pm march kickoff and view Timeline en route to TPP (direct route);
  • 2:30 pm Speakers to be decided, but hopefully to include big picture (What Occupy done in last year) and OH role in it. Then an hour or so of mic checks and speak outs (flextime, if it’s just us, etc.),
  • Around 4:00 pm we have cake and celebration.

We’re urging folks to bring pics or texts or manifestos to post on the Timeline, or old posters, banners, signs, etc. from any of the things that have happened in the past year! Be creative! Nat Gat handbooks. Newspaper articles. We want to fill a wall.

PROPOSALS

At this point there were two proposals evident from the various Reportbacks and discussions. As we were close to quorum (8) we went out and located Leslie who is connected with Kabbalah House and brought her into the meeting for last ten minutes or so.

With quorum we passed the following:

  1. OH endorsed the Ryan action at Chase Mansion in West Hartford.
  2. Sara proposed that the Celebration next Sunday be empowered to act as decision-making body, as a GA, with a view toward duplicating the GA experiences from a year ago if possible.
  3. The regular Saturday GA will also take place on Sat. 10/6/12, at HPL at 2:30 pm. Consensed.

Everybody is to focus on personally inviting (private messages, inviting to event page, etc.) people to our birthday celebration next Sunday!

Report Back

  • Sara – Commune working group – looking at idea of setting up commune on Golden Hill Paugusett reservation in Colchester; met 8.27.12 at Kabbalah House to develop ideas and consider who might be interested in the concept. Has sovereignty from the State of CT but not from the Federal govt.
  • Finance Committee – fund equal about $1,000 between credit union and WePay accounts, less about $210 in expenses from Occupy Renew (total fundraising for Occupy Renew was about $500).
  • Rebecca – For Stop Monsanto – 9.29.12 protests at Big E, both inside (outreach/education) and outside – rally/protest. Info on working group page – no longer “secret”
  • Diane – Lindsay’s court date – on 8.23.12, Lindsay accepted community service (at ASCPA?) because she will be leaving the country. Has to appear in court one more time to report that she has done her time – on 9.17.12!

Proposals

  • OH Anniversary – October 7, 2012 – ideas: to hold a large GA on 10.3.12 (year after the first one); march from Bushnell Park to TPP on 10.7.12; picnic at TPP on 10.7.12. If we want to draw a large crowd we need to program of some sort – teach-in perhaps. May need to raise funds. Stand along the park with signs to let people know we are still here. Need to reach out to “Friends of OH”, using “likes” on FB. Idea of workshops/panels on current issues facing U.S. (resources for action, etc). Include celebration! List all the changes that Occupy has brought about. Mural or timeline of accomplishments. A birthday celebration?
  • Quorum – need to adjust quorum standard so that business can be accomplished – idea of using greatest of last three meetings if quorum had not been met; may need a floor (of 5?) below which quorum could not go. Feeling of the group is that we can’t change quorum WITHOUT a quorum (which we did not have – needed 10); option is to bring the proposals that can’t be acted on to the Monday gathering for a vote (outreach to get quorum)
  • Endorsements – no quorum, so no endorsement

Take-aways

  • Jay – ask Swan to post about Tonia’s teach-in and will post on OH website
  • Rebecca will post teach-in on FB
  • Alice / Jay – create FB Group for OH Renew for both attendees and others interested
  • Sara – will consider ways to spread the word about commune working group and next steps
  • Everyone work to get quorum at Monday gathering for anniversary proposal and quorum vote
  • Nancy – tomatoes (actually a giveaway)
